Jess Erb, R.P., DPsychotherapy:
| Adolescent | Adult | Couple | LGBTQ2* |

I practice primarily within the Relational Psychodynamic framework, which means that when we work together you will not have a removed or overly clinical counsellor, but a real person who meets you not simply as a ‘patient’ but as the expert of your own life! Together, we can delve into even the toughest, scariest, and unspeakable topics in a safe, non-judgmental, and confidential space. I believe that the best therapy happens when a deep trust can form between counsellor and client. With me, you will find a warm, compassionate psychotherapist who feels honoured to meet you in all aspects of your life.

In my practice, I specialize in working with those who have faced trauma, especially through forms of abuse – emotional, physical, sexual, and self-harm. Related to my work on trauma, I provide therapy to those with Borderline Personality Disorder.
Beyond my specialized practice, I work with adults and adolescents in an array of issues such as depression/suicidal ideation, anxiety/panic disorders, grief, and loneliness, as well as eating distress and body image. I also work with couples to address how their past histories impact their current relationships.

As your therapist, I believe that there is no such thing as a ‘Band-Aid’ approach to counselling; therefore, instead of providing quick-fixes, I welcome us to dive into issues together. From the first session with me we will start to talk about the issues that have brought you to therapy and where these might have originated – granting us insight into patterns of behaviour that may have been useful in the past but now may be actually getting in the way of your health. In our second phase of therapy we will start to see patterns emerge based upon your past history. There is nothing taboo with me, and as we learn more about your past, we may uncover areas that were once unconscious – making connections on how the past and present often interweave in our day-to-day lives. In our third phase of therapy we will then start to make these changes – often using the therapy session as a safe place to try these out. Through looking at the past and the larger context of your social world we can start to get a clearer picture as to why you may be facing distress and with this insight, we will work together in overcoming these issues.

I use symptomatology and functional testing to determine how your diet, lifestyle and biochemistry may be affecting your mood and use holistic treatments to help get you back on track. Holistic Nutrition may be for you if you struggle with low mood, or anxiety, along with:

digestive issues (bloating, pain, constipation, gas, diarrhea)
food intolerances
brain fog
PMS
low energy/chronic fatigue
skin conditions
sleep issues
or any other chronic conditions.

Your brain is NOT separate from your body so what happens in your gut, deficiencies, blood sugar imbalances, hormones, toxicities, pathogens, subclinical infections etc are all contributing to your mood, energy and focus and how you show up every day for your family, your job and most importantly for yourself. My aim as a practitioner is to give clients a roadmap to navigate all the conflicting information out there of how to take care of our minds and bodies.

Life as a human is rarely straightforward. Life’s path is complex and can sometimes lead us to experience difficult patterns that continue to show up in relationships with others and within ourselves. Coming to therapy can generate space for more self-investigation to help overcome these long-term struggles and painful repetitions.

My approach to therapy is largely psychodynamic and includes an existential and relational approach. Working this way involves carefully weaving together the past and present, reality and fantasy, to generate more self-acceptance, excitement, and personal meaning. I come from a background in fine arts and find excitement in building bridges between art and life.

Using creativity, warmth, and curiosity, my aim is to provide a safe, honest, inviting and collaborative therapeutic space where we can explore issues including anxiety, depression, ADHD, perfectionism, identity, self-esteem, and relationships. The goal is to uncover what’s underneath these experienced difficulties in order to connect to the innermost parts of yourself.

I’m currently completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and am doing my placement here, at Centred Self, under the supervision of Dr. Jess Erb.

It’s so nice to meet you!

I am a Registered Psychotherapist (CRPO #008555), based in Toronto Ontario. I practice primarily within the Relational Psychodynamic framework, which means that when we work together you will not have a removed or overly clinical counsellor, but a real person who meets you not simply as a ‘patient’ but as the expert of your own life!

The clients I work with:

In my practice, I specialize in working with those who have faced trauma, especially through forms of abuse – emotional, physical, sexual, and self-harm. Related to my work on trauma, I provide therapy to those with Borderline Personality Disorder.

A little bit about me:

I trained as a doctor of psychotherapy at the University of Edinburgh, UK.

For the past decade, I have worked with at-risk youth in both Canada and the UK, and since 2014 have worked as a psychotherapist in Edinburgh (and now Toronto) providing psychoanalysis with adults regarding work-related anxiety, sex/sexuality, gender questioning, relationships/family functioning, depression, and personality disorders. I have also provided ‘Life Review’ work with elderly clients.

For the past five years, I have supervised and trained new psychotherapists and I currently work as a supervisor for those in the helping field. I also provide training and workshops to those in the helping fields who want to learn more about honing their practice through Psychodynamic Practice.

Current projects beyond my practice:

I have published in journals related to feminist research and psychotherapy and currently have several projects in press (see below). I am the co-founder of the ‘Bodies Collective’ that collaborates with scholars around the globe at bringing the physical body back into recognition within the academy. Through the Bodies Collective, we have created a new way of doing research called ‘Bodyography’. I have given numerous presentations at conferences in both North America and Europe and am also an active public speaker on mental health for universities in the UK and Canada.

I am also an active potter and oil painter and am currently working on a project that highlights the intersection between wheel-based pottery, trauma, and psychotherapy: https://www.centredself.ca or follow me at https://instagram.com/centred_self

My practice is person-centred, trauma and attachment informed. I believe the relationship developed between me and you is the foundation to effective therapy. My approach is collaborative and inclusive, meaning I will not be clinically removed but rather warm, empathic, and non-judgemental.

I integrate a number of different treatment models including psychodynamic and interpersonal as well as elements of CBT and DBT, because I believe that everyone is unique and as such requires an approach tailored to them. I don’t believe in band-aids, quick fixes and lots of worksheets.

I believe in providing a safe, open space for you to be heard and validated as we unpack the issues together.

I view the client-therapist relationship as a collaborative partnership where we work honestly and respectfully together to discover inner truths, cultivate growth, and inspire transformation.

I operate from a person-centred, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive framework where the client is compassionately treated as a whole person, rather than just a diagnosis; acknowledging various aspects of their life experience such as race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and culture.

I possess a very calm, warm, and trustworthy personality that helps one feel safe and at ease. I’m also a very attentive, empathic listener who gently helps clients identify their ‘stuck points’ and regulate their emotions via relaxation/mindfulness techniques.

I believe that providing a safe and nonjudgmental space for clients is essential to the therapeutic relationship, and you can rest assured that I can be entrusted with your most painful stories. You are the expert of your own experience, therefore my role is to support you in recognizing and building upon your strengths as we collaboratively develop strategies to improve your life in meaningful ways.

It takes courage to seek help and work through your problems, but with time and commitment, it can be the most rewarding thing you can do for yourself. As your therapist, I’m here to support you on your journey of healing and self-discovery.
